I think Atticus removed his coat and loosens his clothing because this is the most serious moment of his life and he had to take it off to show people that what he had said is what is true and I also think he was kind of nervous to the fact if they believe his words. Atticus then began to stand up to say something, but he first loosen his clothing and took off his coat for his final words. Gilmer was just talking about Tom Robinson and him being guilty. Scout asked Jem what happened and Jem told her that Mr. They talked to each other a little, and then when Dill felt better, they went back inside.
